1st. Regt. of Foot The Royal Regiment officer’s gilt 25mm

The 1st Regiment, The Royal Regiment is the only button in the 1855 -1881 series which does not carry its number on the button. However it is distinct from the post 1881 buttons which carry the regiment’s better known name THE ROYAL SCOTS whereas this example carries the title THE ROYAL REGIMENT. The 25mm officer’s gilt button is in fine condition retaining virtually full original gilt finish. It has the backmark C. PITT & Co. 50 ST. MARTINS LANE LONDON. This officer’s pattern differs from the ORs pattern in having the word REGIMENT  in full as opposed to REGT. and the wording is divided with THE ROYAL above St. Andrew and REGIMENT beneath. The ORs version has all the wording beneath. The full title of the regiment post 1881 was 1st & 2nd Bn. The Royal Scots (The Royal Regiment). may18/2
