20th Hussars. A good pair of Regimental silver plated king’s pattern serving spoons

£120.00

The pair of king’s pattern serving spoons are 13 inches in length are engraved on a garter 20TH HUSSARS and marked on the reverse E M & Co and E &Co, the last mark within a shield which we believe is for Elkington & Co. These spoons were probably made for the mess of the 20th Hussars shortly after the regiment adopted that name in 1877. One of the illustrations shows the spoons against a table spoon to give an idea of scale. One of the spoons has a small area of loss of plate to the reverse of the bowl.     jun29/4

The 20th Hussars took that name in 1877 but the regiment evolved from the 2nd Bengal European Light Cavalry raised during the Indian Mutiny in 1858 by the East India Company. After the re-organisation of the Indian Army shortly afterwards most of the HEICo European Regiments were moved into the British Army. The 20th served in India during the 1860s.
