A full plate vintage photograph, 11 x 8½ ins, showing the British Residency on the banks of the Jhelum River at Srinagar, 1890s. The Resident at Kashmir was one of the most important in the days of the Raj because of the strategic importance of the State of Jammu & Kashmir. The post of Resident to the Maharaja was a sort after one not least because the area offered some of the best sport that was so valued at the time. This good image came from an old album put together by Lt Col Peter Bairnsfather who commanded the 14th Bengal Lancers, Murray’s Jat Lancers. The reverse of the old album leaf has another view in the area – along straight tree lined avenue.  may23/4    SOLD 7th November 2020
