23rd Regt of Foot, Royal Welch Fusiliers, large 25mm brass button

The 25mm brass button would have been worn on the tunic by non commissioned officers [in most cases the fusiliers would have worn general service buttons]. This pattern was worn from 1855 to 1881 and shows the regimental number 23 beneath the Prince of Wales’s feathers with motto Ich Dien. In 1881 the number was dropped and the spelling changed to Welch. The backmark is SMITH & WRIGHT BIRMINGHAM.     mar5/3
