Russell was widely respected as the first war correspondent, wokinhg for The Times . His work begins with his impressions of India and he is able to interview Lord Canning before setting off from Calcutta for Cawnpore, joining Sir Colin Campbell’s force and the remaining 300 pages discuss his observations of the progress and results of the Mutiny. Volume begins on May 5th with a report of the Battle of Bareilly and includes much more about the Indian Mutiny – Meerut, Delhi, Futtehgurh, Lucknow, etc.  Ladendorf 370 credits Russell with giving one of the more balanced balanced reports and notes that although he wrote regular columns on the events for the newspaper these volumes include much more detasiled material and are laced with some slightly later reflection.

John Clements Waterhouse Madden appears in Hart’s Army List for 1912 as a major of the 4th Bn Royal Irish Fusiliers [formerly the 87th Foot]. On the internet there are notes of him as Lt Col of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers.
