xii, 570pp + [1p advertisement for London and Edinburgh Steam Ships with coloured flags]. Contemporary full light brown calf gilt, an escpecially clean copy inside and out, gilt rules with date to spine bright.  A mass of information – details of parliament, army & navy lists with list of ships in ordinary, naval officers down to the rank of captain [including retired], 9pp East India details, lists of freeholders of Scotland, lawyers (writers and advocates) clergy, taxes, fairs, ferries, magistrates, societies, a section on Leith, hospitals, etc. The unusual advertiement at the back of this example is interesting in displaying the coloured flags of the London & Edinburgh Steam Ship company’s four vessels [City of Edinburgh, Monarch, Soho, and James Watt]. It notes that these flags are flown from Nelson’s memorial on Calton Hill with a blue peter above them on the day of sailing.     aug17/3
