Major General Sir Peter Liumsden, K.C.B., C.S.I. Commission of 1881


Printed commission on linen paper with details filled in by hand appointing Sir P S Lumsden, KCB to be a Major General in Our Land Forces, dated 1881, signed George [HRH George Duke of Cambridge, c-in-c], paper royal seal and embossed red revenue stamp. The commission has the usual four vertical folds and there is some surface damage to the verso where it has been partly stuck to an album leaf. Sir Peter Stark Lumsden was born 1829 in Aberdeenshire and had a distinguished service mainly in India and Afghanistan. He was serving in the North West Frontier 1851-4, on special mission to Kandahar in 1857, the China War 1861, Bhootan War 1865, QMG India 1868-72, acting Resident at Hyderabad 1873, Adjutant General 1874-9, Chief of Staff 1879, ADC to Queen Victoria, etc.  Military commissions for general officers seldom appear on the market.     sep4/2

Provenance: From a large archive of material handed down through the Lumsden family. The general himself had no children but his brother, Genera; Sir Harry Lumsden did.
