Lancashire Hussars an identified young officer, 1860s

An extremely good and attractive carte de visite identified in contemporary pencil on the verso as Arthur Ashton. The cdv, by W. Howie, 101 Lord St. Southport, shows the young officer full length wearing a magnificent regimental waistcoat beneath his open frock coat. Ashton was commissioned in 1858 into the 4th (Royal Irish) Regt. of Dragoon Guards and has disappeared from the Army List by 1868. It seems he then served in th Lancahire Hussars, whose uniform he wears in this cdv. The pose is typical of the period when studied casual was the style. The cavalry regiment had its headquarters in Birmingham.    jun7/3  SOLD 7th June 2022
