Cotton, Lieut General Sir Sydney: Nine Years on the North West Frontier of India from 1854 to 1863. Richard Bentley [London[ 1868 1st Edition 8vo.
Folding map [The Peshawur Valley], xii, 352pp. Late 20th century expensive fine binding of half scarlet morocco gilt with marbled paper covered boards, a clean copy, map neatly folded [small tear to one fold with very small area of loss], no previous ownership markings. A handsome looking book which sometimes seems to have been bound with an engraved frontispiece but sometimes does not. Sir Sydney Cotton [1792 – 1874] had seen service in the Pindari War, Burma, and all over India but this work begins with his command of the Frontier from 1853. He carried out expeditions against Afridis, Mohmands, and Hazaras and five chapters deal with the Mutiny. He received much of the credit for the lack of mutinous activity on the North West Frontier later in that decade. Not in Ladendorf. may25/1 SOLD 1st August 2022
