A good association copy of the memories of a Political Agent at Gwalior during the Mutiny

Single page map of India, folding map of Orissa, 6 plates [correct as list], xi.400pp. Original blue cloth gilt, carefully re-cased with the spine laid down, rubbing and wear at corners of boards, foxing to the frontispiece, title page and first map, otherwise quite clean internally, contemporary armorial bookplate of Sir Robert North Collie Hamilton, Bart. Only the last 40 pages or so deal with the Mutiny in Gwalior. Macpherson (1806-1860) entered the Madras Army in 1827 after education in Edinburgh and at Cambridge. During the Mutiny he successfully kept Maharaja Scindia of Gwalior loyal to the Company and Crown. The bookplate is interesting in being that of Sir Robert Hamilton of Silverton Hill, Lanark who was Agent to the Governor General in Central India and a member of the Supreme Council in India in 1859.    apr11/4
