A Pundit’s journey from Nepal to Lhasa in Tibet, 1868

Montgomerie, Captain T. G.: Report of a Route-Survey made by PUNDIT *======, from Nepal to Lhasa, and through the Upper Valley of the Brahmatputra to its Source. By Captain T. G. Montgomerie, R.E., of the Great Trigonometrical Survey, in charge of the Trans-Himalayan Survey Party. Royal Geogeaphical Society, from the 1868 Journal. Read March 23, 1868. John Murray [London] 1st edition 8vo.

Large folding map on a scale of about 1 inch to 25 miles [measuring approx 23 x 12 ins], pp129-218. Professionally removed from the Journal in late 20th century and bound in blue paper covered boards with printed title to upper board, very clean throughout. A substantial account of Himalayan exploration. The astertsk in the ttile leads to an explanation that the Pundit cannot be named for security reasons. Pundit explorers usually travelled incognito to gather sensitive information, sometimes disguising themselves.     mar3/6
