An Irish loyalty button, 24mm, probably late George III period

£55.00 £45.00

An unusual button, which we have never come across before. The flat 24mm button is of high quality fire gilt finish and in excellent condition, The central design has a raised Irish shamrock leaf with the motto QUIS SEPARABIT [usually translated as Who will separate us? ] with a border which might be seen as a sort of celtic knot design. The backmark is GEO WILLIS & Co. 18 St JAMES St. LONDON .  The motto is used by several regiments and Irish associations as well as the Order of St. Patrick but we are not certain of who the wearer would have been. The style and manufacture suggest an early 19th century origin.     mar23/3
