OUSELEY. Armorial bookplate of Sir Gore Ouseley, Baronet.

£75.00

OUSELEY. The impressive 4½ x 3½ ins bookplate for Sir Gore Ouseley, Bart,  has many quarterings and the supporters are Persian warriors no doubt added for Ouseley’s important work as British Ambassador Extraordinary there where he negotiated the 1812 Anglo-Persian Treaty and later mediated between Persia and Russia. These achievements are also shown in the pendant orders beneath the shield.

Sir Gore Ouseley [1770-1844] 1st Baronet came from an Irish family in Limerick and went out to India in 1788, initially in a mercantile capacity but linguistic skills led him into the service of Nawab Vizier of Oudh whose A.D.C. he became.                 nov23/4
