Contemporary full leather, front board and spine loose, spine torn and lacking small area of leather above title, a few loose pages at front and rear, some small areas of worming, old library stamp Supreme Court to title page and a few elsewhere, not a very attractive copy but a very useable, complete working example (we have seen some earlier copies of this directory including a map of Calcutta but one is not present here: a photocopy of a map of 1833 by the same publisher is included in this sale). A mass of useful information and reference material including Army, civil, marine lists, army distribution, list of retired officers in Europe, officers serving in Nizam’s forces, table of salutes, casualties, pay and allowances, commercial lists (merchants, agents, etc), shipping arrivals, births, marriages, and deaths, list of insolvent debtors, etc. It includes material not always in the East India Directory but, of course does not cover Madras and Bombay.      aug17/1
