Original blue cloth gilt, spine faded and some marks (water splashing perhaps) to covers, internally very good, contemporary newspaper obituary pasted to front pastedown, old ownership stamp J H Clowes to front free endpaper together with ink inscription from Major Montresore. William Forbes Gatacre [1843-1906], commissioned into the 77th Foot in 1862, served in the Hazara Campaign 1888, commanded the Mandalay Brigade in the Third Burma War 1889, commanded the 3rd Brigade in Chitral 1895 [awarded CB], he was to command the British forces under Lord Kitchener in the Sudan campaign and commanded a division of 2 brigades at Omdurman, President of Bombay Plague Committee 1897, South African War.
