JOHNSTON & HOFFMANN’S ROYAL TOUR SOUVENIR ALBUM, INDIA 1905 – 1906. Containing a complete Pictorial Record of all the Principal Events in the Indian Tour of Their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales. Johnston & Hoffmann [Calcutta] printed by Cassell & Co. [London] 1906 1st edition oblong 8vo [10 x 7¾ ins].
Frontispiece coloured portraits of the Prince & Princess, [iv] 191pp with well produced photographic illustrations apart from the last 5pp of Index. Original red cloth gilt, a little damage to spine, front board somewhat faded and with a few small stains, split along the upper hinge but the text block [see illustration] ball pen presentation inscription of 1978 to verso of frontispiece written by someone who had been to the event and advises the recipient You will find little change in tdhe places you visit – except that Maharajahs’ palaces are now hotels!! Internally a good, clean copy. The clear photographic plates by the publisher [one of Calcutta’s leading photographers favoured by British and Indian Royalty] are divided by area: Bombay [pp 1-6], Indore [7-10], Udaipur [11-12], Jaipur [13-20], Bikanir [21-24], Lahore [25-34], Peshawar [35-39], Jammu [40-44], Amritsar [45-47], Delhi [48-56], Agra [57-62], Gwalior [61-71], Lucknow [73-77], Calcutta [78-106], Rangoon [107-113], Mandalay [114-121], Madras [121-138], Bnagalore [139-141], Hyderabad [144-158], Benares [159-168], Nepal [169], Quetta [170-179], Karachi [180-187]. Many oxf the images are of less common subjects: those of Calcutta show interior views of the Royal Train, Sikkimese, Bhutanese, rulers at the reception there [including Burdwan, Hutwa, Murshedabad, Gedour, Durbhunga]. mar9/2 SOLD 21st March 2024
