Folding map of Khiva showing Russian operations, 31 illustrations, x.438pp. Original bright green cloth gilt with additional black decorations, front board gilt blocked with the gates of Khiva, all edges gilt, a particularly clean copy with just a few small corners of pages accidentally curled, the map neatly folded. This edition is slightly smaller than the first edition of 1874 but the contents are the same as regards illustrations, pagination and map although the page of publisher’s advertisements before the map appears to have been removed. Macgahan pursued General Kaufmann’s army across the desert and was the first westerner to enter the fallen city of Khiva.
