Canada. An officer of the 16th (Bedfordshire) Regiment photographed circa 1868

A good and rather unusual carte de visite by Canadian photographer W Chase, Opposite Club House, 159 Hollis Street, Halifax N.S., showing an officer of the 16th Bedfordshire Regiment of Foot. He is shown full length wearing a fur lined military coat and riding boots. The photograph is well toned and in good condition although it is lifting a little from the card on the lower right side. The coat, of the style which might be called a poshteen in north India, is possibly a design just made for the extreme cold encountered in Nova Scotia.        dec2/1

Although we cannot identify the officer it is clearly taken around or just after the 1st Fenian Raid action in Canada in 1866. The 1st Bn 16th had 79 personnel involved and thre battalion returned to the UK in 1870. Unusually the Canada General Service Medal  1866-70 was not awarded until 1899.
