Colonel Charles Elmhirst, 9th East Norfolk Regiment of Foot, 1863


The carte de visite, although without photographer’s credit and probably taken abroad, is identified in pencil in a contemporary hand as Colonel Charles Elmhirst , 1863. The officer is shown wearing a tropical white tunic and with a leather and brass cased infantry officer’s sword. Hart’s Army List 1861 shows Elmhirst as entering the 9th Foot in August 1835, captain 1845, Major 1852, Lt. Col. 1855. Colonel 1858. It gives his service as Colonel Elmhirst served with the 9th Regt. in the campaign of 1842 in Affghanistan (Medal). Also in the Crimea from 8th June 1855, including the siege and fall of Sebastopol and assault of the batteries on 18th June (Medal and Clasp, Knight of the Legion of Honor, Turkish Medal and 5th Class of the Medjidie).jan15/5 SOLD 16th January 2023
