Original blue cloth gilt with author’s arms and title gilt blocked to front board, top edges gilt, an excellent, clean, bright copy. John Henry Rivett-Carnac [1838-1923] was the son of an Admiral and descended from a family with a long history of service in India [a grandfather and an uncle were both Governors of Bombay]. He was in the Bengal Civil Service from 1858 to 1894, serving as Commissioner of Cotton, Special Commissioner in the Bengal Famine, raising the Ghazipore Volunteer Regiment, working under Lord Mayo, at the Imperial Assemblage, Private Secretary to Lord Lytton and on the Royal Tour of  H.R.H. the Prince of Wales in the 1870s. He was Aide de Camp to both Queen Victoria and King Edward VII.    aug28/2   SOLD 11th February 2024
