264pp. Original brown cloth gilt with black decoration to front board (including portrait of an Indian), a clean bright copy with just a little wear at head and tail of spine. Contents largely uncut, small withdrawn stamp from John Rylands Library on reverse of title page and a faint stamp on front free endpaper but no other library markings present or removed, old presentation inscription in ink on front pastedown Rev Canon F C Smith. The author, who had wanted to join the Army in India but had not done so, visits in 1860, at the invitation of his friend Sir James Peacock, Lord Chief Justice of Bengal, Calcutta, Benares, Cawnpore   , Lucknow, Alighur, Ambala, Delhi, Multan, Kangra Valley (with Sir Alexander Lawrence), Karachi, Bombay.     aug28/3 SOLD 29.x.2021
