Vol 1: Portrait frontispiece [Harriet, Marchioness of Dufferin & Ava], [10pp prelims] 344pp; Vol 2: [8pp prelims], 346pp, folding map of Viceregal Tours in India & Burma. Original blue and cream cloth with the Dufferin monogram beneath a marquess’s crest in gilt, spine darkened, minor wear at head and tail of spine and corners, marks to upper board of vol 2 but a sound set, text block of vol 2 weak between pp 144/145 [shown in an illustration], no previous ownership markings. A particularly useful and interesting part of this work is the accounts of the various important Autumn Tours and other shorter tours – 1885 [Delhi, Rajputana, Central India. Agra, Lucknow]. 1886 [Feb/March Burma & Madras and Lucknow, Bombay, Hyderabad, Mysore], 1887 Mar/April Darjeeling & Dehra Dun and Karsuthalla, Karachi, The N.W. Frontier, and Lahore]. Other chapters describe the scene in Simla and Calcutta and some special events such as the Durbar at Rawalpindi and the final tour at the end of the Viceroyalty. mar9/1 SOLD 10th March 2023
Frederick Temple Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood [1826-1902] was the son of the 1st baron Dufferin, an Irish peerage. The family seat is Clandeboye in Northern Ireland.
