Hunter, W. W.: A Life of the Earl of Mayo, Fourth Viceroy of India. Smith, Elder, & Co. [London] 1875 1st Edition 2 volumes 8vo.

xi.335pp & vii.374pp, 2pp ads. Original purple cloth gilt, a sound working copy but the spines faded with wear and a tear to volume 1. Ex library, withdrawn labels from University of Keele to pastedowns, other lablels to spines and ffep, contemporary signature J. Dalrymple to half titles and another indistinct signature to head of title page of vol 1.  The 6th Earl of Mayo (1822-72) became Viceroy of India in 1869 and all but the first 110 pages of this semi official biography deal with his successful administration of India until his assassination in the Andaman Islands. He met Shere Ali, Amir of Afghanistan in 1869, establishing good relations. Mayo was a believer in the Forward Policy of pushing British influence into neighbouring states. Much progress was made in railways, education, agriculture, etc during this relatively peaceful period in India, the only major disturbance being the Lushei expedition of 1871-2. His promising period of office in India was tragically cut short by his assassination during a visit to the andaman Islands. A second edition was produced in 1876 in red cloth.    jan31/2
