East India Company, brass 13mm open backed flat button

A small, early button of the East India Company of flat open backed manufacture in brass, partly blackened, measuring 13mm. There is no backmark and the shank is bent but still intact. This button has the design of the Company’s crest of a lion holding a crown within a central lined oval reserve. The fact that this oval has a roped edge would suggest this button could have been worn by naval officers and similar examples are shown in the Greenwich Naval Museum. jun26/5
