lxxii, 500pp including casualty lists 3pp Bengal, 5pp Madras, 2pp Bombay, PoW Island &c. There are no folding shipping tables in this copy and they do not appear to have been bound in [Our reference copy has them and we can send copies of those to the purchaser by email * see footnote]. Contemporary red straight grain morocco, all edges gilt, the rear hinge is broken leaving the rear board and spine detached from the rest of the book, easily re-glued if desired, signed as usual by one of the compilers G Owen, contemporary bookseller’s ticket of Asperne, 32 Cornhill, London, old signature G Bezant to half title and some childish figures to that page and to the blank part of an index page. quite a clean example of a title that often saw much use. Fully indexed lists of all serving and retired officers in the three Presidency armies, together with lists of civil servants, casualties, Indian Navy officers (down to Midshipmen), government officials, European residents, &c. The last ten pages are publishers ads &c and include interesting lists of Necessaries for a Writer, Cadet, Lady, Midshipman. Published when the Marquess of Hastings was Governor General and Commander in Chief.         may20/1

Although this copy is described on the title page as SECOND EDTITION of 1819 there had in fact very unusually already been two previous ones, the first corrected to October 1818 and the other to 3rd Feb 1819. Our own copy of this volume in a very similar binding is dated on the spine 1820, The more of these fascinating books of record one encounters the more quirks appear. Considering the lengthy voyages required for communicating between London and India keeping the lsits do up to date is a remarkable feat. East
