White, Colonel S Dewé, late Bengal Staff Corps: Indian ReminiscencesWm H Allen & Co [London] 1880 1st edition 8vo.

Frontispiece & 1 other plate, xv.263pp. Original plum coloured cloth gilt and blind stamped, faded and with some tears to the cloth of the upper joint but still sound and the hinges undamaged, late 20th century bookplates to front endpapers, no other previous ownership markings, internally sound and clean for its age. Chapters 4-7 cover the Mutiny, during which the author served with the 3rd Europeans (later the 107th Foot). The style is partly that of a general history but with some personal experiences (siege of Delhi, pursuit of Tantia Topi in Central India, etc). The author notes in the introduction that he has delayed writing about the great Sepoy Revolt earlier because he would not have been able to so so dispassionately. Other chapters deal with the Punjab and the Sikh Wars. Quite a scarce title: we last had a copy in 2004.  Ladendorf 417   jun3/6
