2 maps (1 folding), frontispiece photogravure portrait of Gordon three quarter length in uniform, 23 illustrations (about half from excellent photographs), 357pp, 9pp publisher’s catalogue. Original green cloth with red decoration and gilt title, the spine a little dull but only very minor wear and otherwise a very good copy with the usual foxing to some of the rather thick paper of the text. An important biography. Gordon  [1832 – 1914]served with the 4th Foot from 1849, was in the Mutiny 1857-59, Indian Staff Corps, second-in-command on Sir Douglas Forsyth’s Mission to Kashgar and Yarkand, Afghan War 1879-80, DAG Bengal (1879-83), Military Attaché to Persia 1889-93. A busy life as well as a varied one. An excellent and rather scarce Indian  and Central Asian autobiography. From a Scotish military family he was educated at Edinburgh Academy. A  Persian linguist, he served as Miitary Attaché in Persia 1889-93. Yakushi G 89.        aug17/2

Thomas Edward Gordon, C.B., C.S.I.: His services in the Hart’s Army List 1888  read: Colonel T. E. Gordon served as second in command of the 7th Punjab Infantry during the Indian campaign of 1858-59, commanded the Regt at the attack and capture of the Oude Forts Dehayne and Turowl on 14th and 17th July 1858; engaged in operations in the Futtehghur, Azimgarh, and Gorrickpore districts in 1858, and in the Terai, Nepaulm in 1859 (five times mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Major, and Medal). Served in the Afghan war in 1879 in command of a Brigade of the Cabul Field Force, and was present in the engagement at Ali Kheyl (mentioned in despatches, C.B. and Medal). In  June 1893 he was knighted K.C.I.E. and a Lieut. General on the retired list.
