Asingle sheet of duplicated orders by Colonel the Hon W Pakenham, C.B., Deputy Adjutant General showing several officers and troops being ordered to Calcutta. The page measures 8 x 10 inches and is in excellent clean condition with the usual folds. It is additonally signed by the issuing officer Copy W Pakenham, DAQ . Officers mentioned include: Lt Gen the Hon T Ashburnham CB, Brevet Major W Macdonald 93rd Highlanders, Staff Surgeon 2nd Class J Dempster, MD. A scarce ephemeral survival from that period of disruption where the army was struggling to find enough troops to support the East India Company and Queen’s troops in India as the turmoil of the Mutiny unfolded. This document came to us in an archive of material from the Macdonald of Sandside family. Major William Donald Macdonald, 93rd Highlanders was commissioned into the 93rd (Sutherland Highlanders) in 1847. After serving in the Crimea [medal with four clasps] he was DAAG in China from 1856, leaving on 19th November 1857 for his regiment in India. During the Muitny he served in the Doab, , Oude, and Rohilcund, including the capture of Lucknow, Bareilly, and Furruckabad [medal and clasp]. He was a brevet Lieut Colonel from 1860.
