GWALIOR. Interior view of the Durbar Hall in the Jai Vilas Palace, 1930s

A full plate sepia toned vintage photograph, 11½ x 9½ ins, showing a view of the vast Durbar Hall in the Jai Vilas Palace in Gwalior City. The huge glass chandeliers dominate the room and other items of glass furniture by the Birmingham firm Osler appear in the room as they do throughout the palace to this day. Amongst the photographs which adorn the tables is a very fine example of the coronation portrait of King Emperor George V and Queen Empress Mary in an elaborate silvered frame which I believe is one of those given to the honorary Indian Aides de Camp who attended the royal pair on that occasion. Photographs of palace interiors are much less easy to find than those of the exterior.    jul9/4    SOLD    17th September 2020   14
