H. H. Asaf Jah VI, Nizam of Hyderabad with H. H. Gen Lord Napier of Magdala

A very unusual carte de visite, titled in the negative H. H. The Nizam of Hyderabad & Staff  . but without photographer’s credit. The group portrait, in a reserved oval, shows a very young H. H. Mir Mahboob Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VI, Nizam of Hyderabad seated in a large Durbar group in the early 1870s The young Nizam was born in 1863 and ruled from 1866 to 1911. Seated next to the Nizam is H. E. General Lord Napier of Magdala who was Commander in Chief India for a few years after his return from the Abyssinian campaign. Next along the front row is the powerful and long serving Prime Minister of Hyderabad, Sir Salar Jung I followed by a British political officer who is presumably the Resident. Not the sort of subject often seen on a carte de visite and, indeed, not really suited to the scale, this is an unusual and important card. The occasion of this visit by the second highest British official in India is not clear but worth researching.      jul14/3
