HUTWA. A group portrait around the young Maharaja, early 20th century.

£175.00

HUTWA. A large formal group portrait centre around Maharaja Guru Mahadev Prasad Sari of Hutwa and probably dates from around the end of the Edwardian era.

Hutwa [sometimes called Hathwa or Husseypore] was a large princely state in Bihar on the Nepal border and now in Uttar Pradesh. The formal portrait by Fritz Kapp, Dacca is in good condition and measures 11¼ x 9¼ ins and is mounted on the photographer’s original 16 x 14 ins grey card. There is minor damage at the corners, easily disguised if placed in a window mount. Hutwa was ruled by Brahmins of the same group as the Maharaja of Benares. The young prince succeeded his father in 1896 at the age of three and received ruling rights in 1904.         nay12/2
