Indian Mutiny. Mecham’s Contemporary illustrations of the Siege of Lucknow
POA
Mecham, Lieut. Clifford Henry: Sketches & Incidents of the Siege of Lucknow from drawings made during the siege. Day & Son, Lithographers to the Queen [London] 1858 1st edition large folio [22 x 14½ ins, 56 x 37 cm].
Tinted litho title page with vignette of the Baillie Guard, [12pp preceding the title and giving introduction and descriptive notes for the plates], 17 pages with 26 tinted lithographic illustrations. Professionally re-cased with new black leather spine gilt, new rear board and the original front board, with blind stamped decoration and gilt title, edged with black leather. There is some spotting and a few minor closed tears to the margins of the plates, a section of the margin to the dedication page restored and archival tape repairs to some plate edges but this is a rather good example of this book and a complete copy. So often some of the more attractive and dramatic plates have been removed. Several plates present very poignant images – one such being that of the picture of an interior at the Residency where the wall is blown away revealing a battered billiard table Abbey Travel 489 dec15/2 SOLD 5th January 2023
