Vol I [7th edition 1875] xiv, 656pp; Vol II [New Edition 1874] Folding coloured map of Delhi, xvi, 692pp; Vol III [2nd edition 1878] Folding map of Part of Northern India, folding plan of the Final Attack on Delhi, xvi, 702pp. Original pebbled red cloth blind stamped and gilt, spines faded but sound copies, some occasional foxing. This work was usually sold in mixed editions. Each volume has the handsome armorial bookplate of Robert Gordon Gordon-Gilmour of Liberton & Craigmillar, C.B., M.V.O., D.S.O. with a small later owner’s sticker above them, a different Gilmour signature appears at the head of the title pages. This early comprehensive history of the first period of the Indian Mutiny remains a key source of reference today and is no longer easy to find in a complete set. Brigadier Sir Robert Gordon-Gilmour, Bart. [1857-1939] joined the Grenadier Guards in January 1878, serving in the Zulu War, Sudan, Boer War, commanding the 2nd Grenadier Guards from 1902. He later served as Captain in the Royal Company of Archers and was created a baronet in 1926.
