Newell, Major H.A., Indian Army: LUCKNOW (The Capital of Oudh).  A Guide to Places of Interest with History and Map. Harrison and Sons [London] 1st edition, undated – circa 1920 or earlier, small 8vo [7 x 4¾ ins].

Folding sketch map tipped to front cover, 59pp, 2pp ads. Original printed green card covers, some small loss to head and foot of paper spine, rear cover creased near thr top but generally a very good copy, stanp of A.H. Wheeler Railway Bookstalls to title page with their circular blind stamp.  Although undated the book [probably dates from about the First World War period: the author was promoted by the ealry twenties to Lt-Colonel. The author gives a general history and suggestions for a two day tour with details of the major buildings. He does not concentrate unduly on the mutiny but is very conscious of the importance of the city as a centre of Islamic culture and architecture. This edition does not have the pictures found on later editions.  oct16/1
