Major Julian St John Hovenden, Bengal Engineers, 1860s


Major Julian St John Hovenden, Bengal Corps of Engineers. A carte de visite with no photographer’s credit showing the former Bengal Engineer seated. Hovenden joined the Bengal Corps of Engineers in 1850 and the 1858 East India Register shows him serving in the Public Works Department at Peshawar on the North West Frontier. After the Mutiny he served at Gwalior and in the Railway Department, disappearing from the lists in the mid 1870s. jun5/2 SOLD 8th June 2022

Provenance: We acquired this cdv in an album in the large archive of material we acquired which had belonged to Major General Sir Peter Lumsden, GCB, CSI., himself an Engineer with a very distinguished career in India.
