Malleson, Colonel G. B.: A History of the Indian Mutiny, 1857-1858. Commencing from the close of the second volume of Sir John Kaye’s History of the Sepoy War. William H. Allen & Co. [London] 1878-1888 1st and 2nd editions 8vo.

Vol I [2nd edition 1878] xxxi, 575, [iv publisher’s ads]; Vol II [2nd edition 1879] Folding plan of the Army position before Delhi 1857, folding sketch of operations for relief and withdrawal of Lakhnao Garrison, folding plan of Kanpur, folding plan of British Army before Lakhnao in March 1858,  xxxvi, 602pp, [ivpp publisher’s ads]; Vol III [1st edition 1888] xxxiv, 524pp, 4 folding maps- Southern Mahratta Country, Central India campaign of Sir Hugh Rose, final campaign in Delhi, & pursuit of Tantia Topi. [ivpp publisher’s ads]. Original pebbled red cloth, blind stamped and gitl, very decent clean copies, rear hinge of vol II split along endpaper but holding well on tapes. Malleson’s opinionated disagreement with Kaye means that the frist volume here is effectively a re-writing of Kaye’s version of the history.  Ladendorf 69.  feb9/3
