Mr Frederick Whitaker and his Indian Boy. A photograph of its time.

£25.00

A carte de visite by an unnamed photographer titled in red Mr Frederick Whitaker and his Indian boy. Whitaker is shown seated in a studio scene representing a rural view. Next to him is an Indian man holding a book, probably a munshi or secretarial assistant. The reference to the Indian as a boy is the use of the word in an old colonial era meaning any kind of male servant and does not refer to age. We do not know who Whitaker was but the sun helmet he wears is of a militasry style with a pagri wrapped around it. The cdv probabaly dates from the 1870s.    apr6/4
