Napoleon Bonaparte as First Consul, an original aqautint portrait after Boilly

An appealing portrait of the young Napoleon [1769-1821] showing Bonaparte in gilt decorated red coat, bust length in an oval with the wording around reading BONAPARTE PREMIER CONSUL DE LA REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE with a scene of a large military parade below. The framed print, 19 x 13 ins overall [48 x 33cm], has minor damage commensurate with its age and it appears to have had a watercolour wash applied around the edge. The frame is probably about 1900 with a London framer’s label to the verso. It does not appear to have been out of the frame since. The print was engraved by Levachez after a painting by Boilly  and with the aquatinting by Duplessis Bevtaux.  The dating of the print is given as le 29 Thermidor, An X. Year ten of the Republican or Revolutionary calendar dates the image to 1802/3.   SOLD 28th March 2020
