Folding map showing route in front pocket, [ii], 120pp. Original red cloth gilt, faded but completely sound and internally very clean. The small party accompanying the Governor comrpised H C Stokes, C.I.E. [Private Secretary], Captain Cecil Allanson [Military Secretary], and L B Gasson [Aide de Camp]. There is an 8 page tabular timetable [with some printed alterations]. Based at Vellore, Lord Pentland then visited Arcot, Ranipet, Wallajah, Katpadi, Vaniyambadi. The next 80 pages approx cover detailed accounts of the places and institutions to be visited and the last 20 pages list the people H.E. will meet and those attending a luncheon, dinner, and garden party. Although the Governors of the Presidencies had these programmes printed in the style of those produced for the Autumn Tours of Viceroys they travelled in a much simpler group. may24/2 SOLD 23rd February 2023
John Sinclair, 1st Baron Sinclair [1860 – 1925] had served in the 5th Royal Irish Lancers in Sudan and acted as ADC to Lord Aberdeen. A Scot, he was elected to Parliament as MP for Dumbartonshire and served as Secretary of state for Scotland before taking up his post in Madras. He was the son of an officer in the Bengal Army.
