NORTHERN BENGAL. Parts of Districts GOALPARA & GARO HILLS (Assam), DINAJPUR, PURNEA, RANGPUR, DARJEELING & SIKKIM & BHUTAN STATES, & District JALPAIGURI, and COOCH BEHAR. 

 

The map is made up from several sheets of the Atlas of India surveyed under the supervision of Col H. L. Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General of India [Calcutta] the sheets variously dated between 1857 & 1866. No scale given but most probably half an inch to a mile. The sheets from top left are numbered clockwise Continuation Sheets 110, 117, 118, 124, 125, 120, 113, 103, 102. The linen-backed map folds down from its unfolded size of 80 x 51 ins to a size of 10½ x 7 ins with marbled paper covered endpapers in a black cloth covered binding labelled in gilt and numbered on the spine NORTHERN BENGAL 46. The cloth is worn with some splitting along the joints.The map itself is clean and sound.  The top left plates which are largely blank are part of Nepal and the mountainous area top right is part of Tibet. Just below the mountains is the military station of Jalpaiguri on the river Tista and the larger river joining the map top right and running south is the Brahmaputra. Near the left edge of the map 100 miles from Jalpaiguri is the princely state of Darbhanga.   mar2/5   SOLD 16th June 2022
