The Most Noble Order of the Garter. Ticket for the Installation in the Nave of St George’s Chapel Windsor, April 23rd 1805

An engraved card ticket, measuring approximately 6 x 4½ ins [110 x 154 mm] with a handsome rendering of St George slaying the dragon with a garter beneath the royal crown. The ticket has manuscript insertion of the date  April 23 1805 [St George’s Day, in the year of Trafagar] and is signed by two stewards and numbered 211. This was the last time that formal installaton of new Knights took place in St George’s Chapel. On this occasion six new knights were installaed: the 6th Duke of Beaufort, the 1st Marquess of Abercorn, the 11th Earl of Pembroke, the 9th Earl of Winchelsea, the 5th Earl of Chesterfield, and the 3rd Earl of Dartmouth. A very unusal piece ot ephemera from the reign of King George III to appear on the market. The card is a little darkened but perfectly sound, very small ink blots top left corner  Then, as now, appointments to this highest British order of knighthood is in the sole gift of the Sivereign, without reference to the government. jul14/2       RESERVED 13th July 2022
