James Johnstone [1841-1895] was one of the last East India Company cadets and went out to India during the Mutiny to join the 68th Bengal Native Infantry [which had mutinied] in February 1859. After serving in the Trans Gogra Force in the Mutiny and in the Bhutan War he became Political Agent at Manipur in 1877, holding that post until 1886. He was made C.S.I. in 1881 and knighted in 1887.
