This work contains names of all substantive Officers of the Indian Civil Service. A particularly useful section (bearly 400 pages) is Records of Service, which gives biographical details of those serving in 1928 and may of those still living who had retired. The biographies usually include full name, education, dates of offices held, honours. The masses of other information includes lists of holders of orders and decorations (including Kaisar-i-Hind), casualty list, maharajas and other rulers, Royal Indian Marine and surviving officers of the late Indian Navy, details of salaries and appointment conditions, civil and military regulations, post office details, etc. An invaluable primary source of information. At this period the Indian Army List is not included in this work (it now appears as a separate Indian Army List) although the biographies include many military officers who have held posts in the foreign service and have acted as agents or residents. This edition covers part of the period Lord Rwin [later Earl of Halifax] was Viceroy of India Field Marshal Sir William Birdwood was commander in chief.      dec10/3
