Folding map [2 closed edge tears], single page map, xvi [including useful glossary of words]. 451pp, 12pp publisher’s catalogue. Original plum coloured cloth blind stamped and gilt with her ladytship on an elephant blocked to the front cover, boards and spine rather faded [as usual], small chips to head and tail of spine but without significant loss, a a sound, clean copy of a work which is now hard to find in the original binding. The first decent copy we have had of this important work in some years, 20th century owner’s bookplate to pastedown but no ther previous ownership markings. Florentia Sale [1780-1853] was in Kabul with her husband General Sir Robert Sale [1782-1845] but was captured by Akber Khan was able to keep a diary throughout her ordeal and eventually bribed her captors and escaped to rejoin her husband.
