1/11th Gurkha Rifles. A good group photograph of the officers with their commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Douglas Roe, D.S.O., O.B.E., in the centre of the seated front row, 8 x 6¼ ins.  It is numbered in the negative 3522 E/20 9 and 11 G R s is added  by hand in the negative. The photograph was taken shortly after the 1st battalion of the regiment was formed in 1918 at Kut-al Amara and saw service in 1919 in the Third Afghan War before being disbanded in 1922, The background to the portrait suggests this was probably taken during the 3rd Afghan War. aug31/5

Provenance: Acquired from a descendant of Lt. Colonel Charles Douglas Roe, D.S.O., O.B.E. [18882-1960]. He was originally commissioned into the Royal Iish Regiment, transferring to the Indian Army in 1904. He was a Captain serving as a double company officer in th1/4th in 1911.  With the same regiment in World War One he was twice mentoned in despatches and awarded his D.S.O. in 1915 for conspicuous gallantry near the Bois de Biez [one of our attachments shows his citation fromThe V.C. and D.S.O.Vol.II ].
