Contemporary or near contemporary full leather with unlettered spine, binding sound but cleverly re-hinged at some time, title page repaired and with two small holes not affecting the printed area, old signatures to top margin, some old pencil writing to endpapers, otherwise quite clean with no further ownership markings. An uncommon history of the Company, especially in this first edition in a year which saw further great changes in its administration. A copy is listed in the Catalogue of the Library of the Hon. East India Company 1845 page 26. Although there are modern reprints this is a scarce book in its first edition. aug18/1
Sir Robert Grant, G.C.H. [1779-1838] was born in Bengal but educated inj England. A lawyer, he rose to be Advocate General in 1832 and was Governor of Bombay from 1835.
