22nd Madras Native Infantry, officer’s 20mm, open backed gilt button

POA

East India Company. An excellent example of an early officer’s 20mm gilt button of the 22nd Madras Native Infantry The open backed button does not have a backmark but is of high quality, retaining virtually the full original gilt finish. It has the design of the regimental number XXII within a garter with the word REGIMENT  beneath a crown which is probably of the George IV period. The National Army Museum shows  a somewhat similar button from the Chapple collection but it has a closed back and battle honours on a circlet, Our example has every appearancxe of dating from around the time the regiment was named in 1824. jul3/1 SOLD 8th July 2025
