25th Cavalry, Frontier Force. A British officer, painted by A.H. Bowllng
£340.00
An attractive and accuratley detailed full length portrait of a British officer painted on stout beige card, 16 x 11 ins. [40.5 x 27.5 cm], and ideal for framing. It is signed and titled in white at the base A. H. Bowling 25th Cavalry. Frontier Force. 1915. The officer wears a blue kurta with red facings and gold lace. His dramatic turban or pagri of red yellow and black has a central kulla and his sword is reminiscent of ones worn from the 1820s by some British light cavalry regiments. The regiment assumed this title in 1903 [formerly the 5th Punjab Cavalry] and in 1921 it was amalgamated with the 22nd Sam Browne’s Cavalry. The painting probably dates from the mid to late 20th century. The only blemish is a small stain just above the start of the title. jun1/1
Provenance: Formerly in the collection W. Y Carman [1909-2003] prolific author and museum director.
