28th Foot, Gloucestershire Regiment, a young lieutenant, 1860s

£35.00

28th Foot, Gloucestershire Regiment. A carte de visite by Maull & Polyblank, 55 Gracechurch Street, 187A Piccadilly, and Tavistock House, Fulham Road, London showing a young lieutenant full length with his shako resting on a column beside him. The plate on the last pattern shako clearly shows the regimental number 28. The verso has pencil writing in different hands. The seemingly contemporary name at the top is Edwd Agincourt Brind  and an officer of this distinctive name appears in Hart’s Army List 1868 but seving in the 88th Foot, into which he was commissioned in 1884. Conceivably he changed regiments at some point. The plot thickens. may21/6

The London photographer Maull & Polyblank had studios on Gracechurch Street and on Piccadilly. The firm began trading in around 1856 and continued under this name until 1865 after which it became known as Maull & Co.
