6th Dragoon Guards, Carabineers. An original helmet of the 1847 pattern worn by the heavy cavalry.
£1,400.00
6th Dragoon Guards, Carabineers. An original helmet of the Albert pattern introduced in 1847 and worn by the heavy cavalry until replaced by a simplified model in 1870. This example has a particularly handsome three part badge. It lacks the chin scales and the plume, traces of which remaining suggest it was the earlier black horsehair variety. The skull has signs of wear with dents although there appear to be no cracks. We cannot guarantee that these marks were the result of action although it is the pattern of helmet that was worn in the charge of the Heavy Brigade at Balaklava where the regiment was very much to the fore. It retains the original red leather headband inside. Today good examples of the regiment’s history can be seen in Edinburgh Castle where the regimental museum reflects its eventual amalgamation with the Royal Scots Greys. may20/4
